The Myth of Dragon Girl:

Chapter 1 introduced the background of Liu Yi and depicted the first meeting between both protagonists. During the reign of Emperor Tang Gao Zhong of the Tang Dynasty, the capital of the city held an imperial examination. Liu Yi, is a scholar from Xiang Zhou 湘州. He failed the imperial exam and on his way back to his hometown, he passed through a forest. He met a monster and a lady crying at the side of the lake. The presence of Liu Yi startled the lady, and she transformed into a dragon and stared at Liu Yi. Liu Yi introduced himself and explained to the lady that he meant no harm to her. After resolving the misunderstanding, the lady turned back into human form. Out of curiosity, Liu Yi asked her the reason she cried.

A modern reinterpretation of traditional Chinese narrative through the creation of digital illustration.

The traditional narrative is a part of the cultural heritage of a country, which provides excellent resources and inspiration for creative production. To promote the history and traditions of the Chinese to the world stage, numerous Chinese traditional narratives had reinterpreted into different forms. The adaptation of stories had led the conventional to become a trend in China. As Malaysian Chinese, we are familiar with most of the classic stories. However, some specific classics are being neglected by most of the local Chinese; ‘The Myth of Dragon Girl’, also known as ‘Legend of Liu Yi’, a story about a young scholar who fall in love with the Dragon Girl and rescued her from her evil husband. This study aims to investigate the process of recreating the narrative in the form of digital illustration, including storyline adaptation, character design, and explore how to integrate traditional Chinese elements with modern techniques. First, focuses on the narrative in different versions of interpretation to analyze the development of storyline and character traits; then, retains the main structure, acquire the essence of each edition, and adapts the plots. Secondly, three picture books selected to conduct a visual interpretation analysis to explore the evolution of art style, the physical appearance of the characters, and elements adopted in each picture book. Next, ‘Nymph of the Lou River’, an additional visual material selected under examination to analyze the format of scroll painting. It is a work to bring the traditional narrative back to life and communicate with audiences through image creation.
